Post for girls and brave boys

menstrual-cup-mooncup

About half the worlds population needs to battle with Red River Indians each month – some turn moody, some schedule vacations around it others just have a little bit less energy. You still don’t know what I am talking about? Maybe monthly flow, period or menstruation mean more to you.

Now why exactly would this be a topic for a blog on mainly environmental issues?
Unless you use washable towels, having your period produces waste: pads, tampons. Also these things can be quite pricy and when travelling to certain countries your preferred choice might not even be available. So when I heard about this thing called mooncup, I really liked the idea and thought maybe you would be interested in hearing about it as well!

What is it?
“The Mooncup is a reusable menstrual cup around two inches long and made from soft silicone rubber.” (Mooncup UK)

It claims to be better for your health as well as it does not introduce any chemicals or will leave fibres behind. Personally I never had this problem, but glad to hear it! Anyway, so you buy it once, use it for up to 15 years, you need to clean it, but this can be done with toilet paper and water and once in a while boiling it in water might be a good idea.

Here is a list of some companies where you can buy this product. Note it comes in different prices, but some will last longer than others: Mooncup, Keeper, Divacup, Lunetteinfo

I wonder if anyone who reads this has tried mooncups before?

Sounds like a very nice concept. Would be interesting to hear if this really is useful in practise as well…

Yes! I just bought mine in January this year and have been using ever since. I never liked tampons because I could feel them inside me, but I don’t feel the mooncup. It takes a few attempts to insert, but if you’re used to tampons without applicators, it should be fine. It means I never have to make sure I’m in stock with sanitary products. It doesn’t smell. It is very environmentally friendly! And I don’t have to buy any sanitary products from now on!

Interesting thanks for sharing this Judith.

Another great option if you’re worried about leakage (I had that problem with the diva cup) is sea sponges. They are actually little creatures from the ocean which are sustainably harvested (according to the packaging at least) and you use them exactly like a tampon without applicator. They are reusable for 6 months to a year, and you just rinse them with water between each use, and then clean them with hot water at the end of your cycle. Here is the link to the UK site. http://www.seapearls.co.uk/ I really love these things

Thanks for that post Jade! A few friends have tried them now, some found them real great others had some difficulties to take the sponch out again. I wonder whether there are some nets or something.. Any ideas?
While browsing the net a little I found out that there are also other kinds of sponches.. here is a site explaining how you can grow and make your own:
